This is the pattern of trade from 1946 – 2009 for Trumptonland. On balance I would say “net importer”. Downside – at some point you have to pay for it. I think it was Grub who had to be let go from the fire brigade to reduce public sector borrowing (will confirm with Harford). Will continue this theme…

Update 21/08/11: Tim Harford informs me (Twitter) that it was Dibble who was made redundant. I understand he’s now studying an MSc in Maths & Economics at Trumpton Business School, and wants to go on to do a PhD. Watch this space.
